Maid to Millionaire

Maid to millionaire? If you think that this is impossible unless she had won a lottery or over a get-rich-scheme, then you are wrong.

Surprisingly this is a TRUE story. This is about a Filipino maid in Singapore who became a millionaire. This is all thanks to her hard work and devotion for over the past 20 years.

The 47-year-old single woman, identified only by the pseudonym "Christine" said that she is the luckiest maid in Singapore. The maid kept her real name a secret from the public for fear of possible threats to her life in the impoverished Philippines, where wealthy people have been kidnapped for ransom and some killed by their abductors.
"Christine" inherited six million Singapore dollars (more than four million US) from her late employer after more than 20 years of service. The windfall, including cash and a luxury apartment came from the estate of her employer Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist who died last year at 66. The maid had also taken care of the doctor's late mother, and was told that she would be a beneficiary of her employer's will when it was drawn up in 2008.

"Christine" was devastated when Doctor Quek died a year ago, as the two were inseparable. It was heartbreaking for her as she spent more years with Doctor Quek than with her own mother. The maid, who is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, said her new found wealth had not changed her lifestyle. She informed the Press that she does not really think much about the inheritance but to live life as she did before and not as a rich person. She does not behave differently and her Filipino maid friends in Singapore still treat her the same.

Nearly 200,000 foreign maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in affluent Singapore, which has a population of five million.
